SPECIAL EQUIPMENT:

Actually the sofar mentioned equipment would easily fill our packs. However a Greenland expedition afar from any civilization does require some further special equipment that is not usually found in an alpinist's backpack.
- Satellite telephone
A satellite mobile phone can be used worldwide. We will use it for live reports to our media partners and as our primary means of communication in case of an emergency.
Since the polar ragions are only covered by the Iridium Satellite System we will use an Iridium 9505a Satellite Phone from Motorola.
- Emergency radio beacon
Upon activation the emergency beacon transmitts a signal on the international emergency frequencies 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz. The signal and the individual code will be received by satellite (COSPAS/SARSAT) and can be located precisely. In case of an emergency this enables a fairly quick initiation of a rescue operation.
We use an ACR Aquafix 406 I/O with internal GPS. As with all 406 MHz Beacons it is imperativ to programm a unique identification number (UIN) with the corresponding country and have the unit registered.
- GPS and altimeter
GPS and altimeter are not only used for navigation in white-out conditions but also for the survey and documentation of our planned first ascents. In areas where only few geographical data is available, we want to measure exact positions and altitudes of sofar unnamed mountains.

- Foto Tank
To store the considerable amount of digital photo data we will use an autonomous hard drive with USB and card reader. The media storage device will also be used to save expedition log entries.
- Solarcells
All these devices as well as our cameras need battery power. We will use solar cells to produce enough power to keep the batteries charged (also see energy). After extensive testing we decided to use the powerfull and robust solar panels from Flexcell. The solar power will be stored in VARTA high energy rechargeables.
- Polarbear defense
Even far away from the coast the danger of encountering a polarbear is very real. At night we will protect our camp with a trip-wired acoustical alarm. For self defense we will also carry a firearm. We will rent the rifle from Nanu in Greenland. Just recently in May 2006 an english expedition was attacked by a polarbear as far as 60 km away from the coast.

equipment plan as pdf-download.
